Massage in India is featured as far back as 4,000 years in Ayurvedic texts. Babies receive regular daily massage and this continues even into childhood. After the age of 6 or so, children are taught to share a massage with family members and this becomes an integral part of family life.
Indian Head Massage springs from this tradition and has been practised for over 1,000 years. It was originally developed by women where oils were massaged into their hair to maintain it’s good health and lustre.
In the barbers’ shops men often received head massage as part of a hair cut or shave. This massage was mainly invigorating, designed to stimulate and refresh.
Narendra Mehta came over from India in the 1970’s to train as a physical therapist. He found to his acute dismay that he could not obtain a head massage at the barbers or even in all the complementary therapies available at that time. He returned to India and travelled extensively, experiencing all the different techniques used by barbers and women across the sub-continent.
As a blind person he is extremely sensitive and he was able to experience the different effects the techniques had on the body and mind. He returned to England and found that when he included massage of the upper back, neck and shoulders, these added to the benefits of the head techniques. He also introduced energy balancing of Ayurvedic origin and a new therapy was born.
Mr Mehta launched this therapy in 1981.

The Sanskrit word “champi” means head massage. That is where the word “shampoo” comes from.
