Having a treatment on your head to deal with headaches, or having someone working on your neck or shoulders when they are painful, made sense to me. So, at one of the Mind, Body, Spirit exhibitions a few years ago, when suffering with a really persistent headache, I took up the offer to try an Indian Head Massage to see if it would help. I was amazed! The steady, deep, heavy ache I had had for all day was lifted and my head felt light and airy. I felt a “newer” person.
Exactly one year later I went along again to a similar type of exhibition, this time carrying with me the recurrent pain of an earlier neck injury. This time I was lucky to have on offer an Indian Head Massage by the main man himself, Mr Narendra Mehta, who pioneered the therapy to this country. At the end of my treatment I left the stand with much less pain and a slightly ruffled hairstyle!
I was hooked! I had to learn this therapy so I travelled to London to study with Mr Mehta at his Centre. That was 1996 and it marked the beginning of a new phase of learning. It involved intensive study of the therapy, case studies, anatomy and physiology, and allied subjects to the therapy. I loved it. It was a therapy that made sense to me for the stresses of today. A person is treated without the removal of clothing, just as they are, sitting in a chair. Shoulders, arms, neck, scalp, ears and face are the receivers of many techniques of massage, both stimulating and relaxing, and energy balancing is carried out at the end of the session.
Benefits from a treatment include more relaxed muscles, lowered blood pressure, relief from eyestrain and sinusitis, and a feeling of peace and calm is experienced. The receiver of Indian Head Massage will often become so relaxed that they fall asleep!
In my late 20’s I found a practice which worked and relieved stress, yoga. This I practise and have taught for many years. Now, many years on, this new stress relieving therapy has made an impact on me. Mr Mehta has given it an added name, Champissage. (The word “champi” means head massage in Hindi). By working on the muscles, circulation, lymph and the energy centres in the body, changes are experienced within half an hour. There is peace to contact and experience within us all if only we can become relaxed and calm.
This is a therapy I believe in. It is a therapy of the millennium.
